ENGAGING CREATIVITY + UNLOCKING GRATITUDE
Can you even define creativity?
Realistically I understand that creativity can be defined, in fact it can me stated that creativity is “the use of the imagination or original ideas, especially in the production of an artistic work”. (Definition from Oxford Dictionary) Maybe it is not the actual definition that is hard to comprehend, but what constitutes artistic work. If you have followed me on social media for long, you know that I am passionate about people creating beauty - knowing that we are designed to experience beauty, embrace beauty and create beauty. Every single person.
So who defines artistic work?
In essence, it is what gifts that you are naturally gifted in that allow you to create beauty in the world. From written words, photography, paintings, arranging flowers, cultivating a garden - to a mechanic who creates with their hands what others are incapable of doing.
God created each of us in such a way that we are called to create beauty and in doing so, we discover gratitude.
Here are a few ways to find your gratitude through creativity.
Change in perspective: Creativity allows us to think about the things that are in front of us and help us gain a beautiful appreciation for experiences and a richness to life. It literally creates gratitude for what we see.
Expression of soul: Engaging in creative expression such as art, writing, music (or anything that you enjoy creatively) provides a space for creativity to flourish. When you are able to find the space for creativity, you are able to find a way to express your gifts, which is a reflection of pieces of your soul. Allowing people to see those pieces is brave, however if you simply create for yourself, you are allowing yourself to do what it is naturally created to do - create beauty.
Calming reflection: Creativity often requires concentration and being the present moment. Thus, it can cultivate mindful meditation. It speaks to the importance of having moments of stillness and mindfulness to recognize our purpose. When we see our purpose, we find focus and understanding. Being in that stillness + reflection permeates gratitude.
Positive reflection: Creative practices such as journaling or photography can encourage reflection on positive experiences and moments of gratitude, reinforcing these feelings and making them more salient in daily life.
Connection: Creativity can facilitate connections with others by sharing gratitude-themed creations or collaborating on projects that celebrate shared blessings and experiences. This social aspect strengthens bonds and creates a supportive community centered around gratitude.
